Metabolic and physiological alterations indicate that the tropical broadleaf tree Eugenia uniflora L. is sensitive to ozone

چکیده

Eugenia uniflora L. is an important fruit tree native to tropical South America that adapts different habitats, thanks its metabolic diversity and ability adjust the leaf antioxidant metabolism. We hypothesized this would also enable E. avoid oxidative damage tolerate enhanced ozone (O3) concentrations have been registered in (sub)tropics. investigated whether carbohydrates, polyphenols antioxidants are altered markers of (ROS accumulation, alterations gas exchange, growth biomass production) detected plants exposed two levels O3 (ambient air twice elevated level a O3-FACE system for 75 days). Phytotoxic dose above threshold 0 nmol m−2 s−1 (POD0) accumulated exposure 40 ppb (AOT40) were 3.6 mmol 14.898 h at ambient, 4.7 43.881 O3. Twenty-seven primary metabolites 16 phenolic compounds leaves. Contrary proposed hypothesis broadleaf trees relatively tolerant, we concluded sensitive concentrations. Experimental POD0 values lower than critical visible foliar O3, because low stomatal conductance. In spite uptake, found classic injury, e.g. reduction carbohydrates fatty acids concentrations; non-significant changes polyphenol profile; inefficient responses; increased contents ROS indicators lipid peroxidation; reductions conductance, net photosynthesis, root/shoot ratio height growth. However, some compensation mechanisms, concentration polyols protecting membranes, number compensating decline photosynthetic rate. These results help filling knowledge gap about responses

Chloroplast DNA variation and phylogeography of Eugenia uniflora L. (Myrtaceae) in the Brazilian Atlantic forest

Introduction and objectives The Atlantic Forest (AF) is considered the second largest tropical forest in South America with high species richness and endemisms, harboring a large diversity of animals, plants and habitats types [1]. This biome covers an area of more than one million square kilometres along the Brazilian coast and extending to eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina [2]. AF i...

Evaluation of Antioxidant, Immunomodulatory, and Cytotoxic Action of Fractions from Eugenia uniflora L. and Eugenia malaccensis L.: Correlation with Polyphenol and Flavanoid Content

An increasing number of biological activities presented by medicinal plants has been investigated over the years, and they are used in the search for new substances with lower side effects. Eugenia uniflora L. and Eugenia malaccensis L. (Myrtaceae) have many folk uses in various countries. This current study was designed to quantify the polyphenols and flavonoids contents and evaluate the immun...

Seasonal variation in the phenol content of Eugenia uniflora L . leaves

Hydrolysable tannins, total phenols and flavonoids in Eugenia uniflora leaves were monthly analysed for one year. The results were correlated with climate conditions (rainfall, humidity, cloudiness and mean temperature) through chemometric methods. Principal component analysis revealed high levels of hydrolysable tannins in the rainy season, whereas flavonoids were mainly produced in the dry se...

Antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects of purple pitanga (Eugenia uniflora L.) extract on activated hepatic stellate cells.

The presence of phenolic compounds in fruit- and vegetable-rich diets has attracted researchers' attention due to their health-promoting effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of purple pitanga (Eugenia uniflora L.) extract on cell proliferation, viability, mitochondrial membrane potential, cell death and cell cycle in murine activated hepatic stellate cells (GRX). Cel...
